I’ve been sharing a lot about trees recently, so today I wanted to shift focus and spotlight some magical plants and herbs for protection. Protection magic is one of the foundations of any witchcraft, magical or spiritual practice. And the best part? Mother Nature provides everything we need for free! Even better, you probably already have some of these herbs in your home.
- Rosemary – The Universal Herb
Official name: Rosmarinus Officinalis
Element Association: Air and Fire
Zodiac/Planetary Influences: Leo, Libra, Sun and Moon
Magical Properties: Protection, cleansing, wisdom, remembrance, strength, banishing, ancestral veneration and love.
“Rosemary is said to be the ‘jewel of the Mediterranean’ and in Italy it’s said that rosemary grows near the homes of strong women.”
Paige Vanderbeck, ‘Green Witchcraft: A Practical Guide to Discovering the Magic of Plants, Herbs, Crystals, and Beyond.” Rockridge Press. 2020. Pg. 100
How to use Rosemary for Protection of your Home
Make a Rosemary Guardian for your Front Door.
- Choose a fresh rosemary plant that calls to you from your local garden store or market.
- Pot her in healthy soil and place within 3 feet of the main entrance to your home.
- Do not leave outside in harsh weather! Bring back inside if needed.
- Bless and consecrate your new guardian plant with a simple ritual. For example:
“Beautiful guardian of this threshold, I welcome you to my home. Watch over this entrance permitting positive energies to enter while banishing any negativity or harm.”
Vivienne Grant. “The Green Witch’s Herbal: A Practical Guide to Magical Herbs, Natural Remedies and Green Witchcraft.” Vivienne Grant. 2025. Pg. 93-95.
- Then walk clockwise 3x to define a protective boundary around the plant.
- Add some crystals like black tourmaline or selenite to amplify its protective properties.
- Water regularly and speak to her daily to develop a bond!
My Personal Practice with Rosemary
I use Rosemary in just about every magical working. Here are some of my favorite ways:
Cleansing my tarot decks: Sprinkle rosemary and sea salt into a tarot pouch or the box it comes in and let the deck sit for 1-2 days.
Banishing rituals: During Waning or New Moons, sprinkle rosemary on or around your candle spells.
Room protection: Mix rosemary with a little sea salt and crushed egg shells to sprinkle around the perimeters of the rooms in your home. (Be careful if you have pets that they do not ingest large quantities!)
Charm bags or talismans: As rosemary is so multi-purpose, I always include it for love, protection, ancestral connection and more!

- Dragon’s Blood – Fiery Protection Power
Official Name: Dracaena Cinnabari
Elemental Association: Fire
Zodiac/Planetary Influences: Mars and Jupiter
Magical Properties: Protection, good fortune, cleansing, hex breaking, manifestation, love, passion.
Technically not an herb, Dragon’s Blood is a resin, from trees native to Northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Its beautiful red sap produces a resin you can buy in chunks, powdered incense or oils.
Ref. Vanderbeck, Paige. ‘Green Witchcraft: A Practical Guide to Discovering the Magic of Plants, Herbs, Crystals, and Beyond.” Rockridge Press. 2020. Pg. 100
For a quick banishing of negative energies:
- Mash some dragon’s blood resin together with dragon’s blood oil in your mortar and pestle.
- Dress your candles with this oil while doing a banishing spell.
- Or you can also anoint yourself with a few drops of this on your wrists.

My Personal Experience with Dragon’s Blood
I have an altar for dragons in my room set up with a dragon’s head tea light candle surrounded by crystals, jewelry, and chunks of dragon’s blood resin.
I have used Dragon’s Blood to:
- Attract love and passion
- Protect my space and banish negative energy
- Attract good luck
- Bring in the fire element to my spells
Pro tip: The fiery energy attracts what you desire very quickly and strongly. So I would suggest, when using Dragon’s Blood to be careful what you wish for, you just might get it!

- Lavender – Peaceful Protection
Official Name: Lavandula Angustifolia
Elemental Association: Air
Zodiac/Planetary Influences: Gemini/Virgo, Mercury
Magical Properties: Protection, sleep, calming, psychic awareness, purification, healing.
How to use Lavender for Protection:
- Plant Guardian: Have a lavender plant on your front porch, like the rosemary guardian.
- Home cleansing: Use lavender incense or lavender oil in a diffuser to clear negativity and promote calm. (Again, be mindful if you have pets!)
- Spell Satchels: Add dried lavender, thyme, mugwort and rosemary along with some amethyst, black tourmaline or howlite chips to a satchel. Keep under your pillow to protect, promote a peaceful night’s sleep, and bring intuitive dreams.
